Question 138 · Parables of Jesus
What is the message of the Parable of the Talents?
Biblical Background
The parable teaches faithful stewardship of God-given gifts, responsibilities, and opportunities (Matthew 25:14–30). The master entrusts talents to his servants; two invest and multiply them, while one hides his out of fear. The faithful servants are rewarded; the unfaithful one is condemned.
Historical Context
Talents were large sums of money, representing significant trust. Jesus uses financial imagery to highlight responsibility and accountability.
Theological Meaning
The parable emphasizes that believers must serve God actively. Faithfulness, not comparison, is the measure of success. God expects His gifts to be used for His Kingdom, and judgment reflects the heart’s response to divine trust. Faithful discipleship involves risk, courage, and devotion.
