Question 158 · Salvation

How does Jesus’ role as Judge relate to salvation?

Biblical Background

Jesus is appointed by the Father as the Judge of all humanity (John 5:22–27). His judgment is righteous, perfect, and based on truth. For believers, Jesus’ role as Judge is good news, because the Judge is also the Savior who died for them.

Historical Context

Judgment was a major expectation in Jewish thought. Jesus expands this by revealing Himself as the one who will execute final judgment.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ judgment ensures that salvation is meaningful—evil will be punished, justice will prevail, and righteousness will triumph. For believers, salvation includes deliverance from condemnation (Romans 8:1). Jesus’ dual role as Savior and Judge emphasizes both His mercy and His authority.
