What role does the Holy Spirit play in Jesus’ life and ministry?
Biblical Background
The Spirit is active in Jesus’ conception, baptism, temptation, miracles, teaching, and resurrection. Jesus ministers in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:18) and offers the Spirit to His followers (John 14:26). The Spirit testifies to Jesus’ identity and guides believers into all truth.
Historical Context
Early Christians recognized the Spirit’s presence in Jesus’ ministry as evidence of the Trinity at work. Pentecost confirmed Jesus’ promise that the Spirit would empower the church.
Theological Meaning
The Spirit is the bond of love between Father and Son and the one who applies Jesus’ saving work to believers. The Spirit empowers, sanctifies, comforts, and indwells the people of God. Jesus and the Spirit work inseparably, revealing one divine mission shared by three divine persons.
