Question 33 · Discipleship & Mission

Why did Jesus have an inner circle of Peter, James, and John?

Biblical Background

Jesus invited Peter, James, and John into especially significant moments, such as the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1–9), the raising of Jairus’s daughter (Mark 5:37–43), and Gethsemane prayer (Mark 14:32–34). This inner circle experienced Jesus’ glory, power, and suffering firsthand.

Historical Context

Leaders often formed smaller circles of trusted followers. Peter, James, and John were core figures in the early church—James became a martyr early, John lived the longest and contributed major writings, and Peter emerged as the leading apostle.

Theological Meaning

The inner circle signifies intentional spiritual formation. Jesus models mentorship—focusing deeply on a few to impact many. Their unique experiences strengthened their future leadership and gave them deeper insight into Jesus’ divine identity and mission. Their testimony became foundational for the apostolic message.
