Question 72 · Jesus in John’s Gospel

Is Jesus God?

Biblical Background

Jesus is explicitly identified as God in numerous passages. John 1:1 declares, “The Word was God,” and Thomas confesses, “My Lord and my God!” in John 20:28. Jesus receives worship (Matthew 28:9), forgives sins (Mark 2:5–7), and claims divine prerogatives such as eternal existence (“Before Abraham was, I AM,” John 8:58). These affirmations reveal a divine identity unique among ancient Jewish teachers.

Historical Context

The early church unanimously worshiped Jesus as divine, which is remarkable given Judaism’s strict monotheism. Early creeds, such as the Nicene Creed (325 AD), affirmed that Jesus is “true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father.” This was not a later invention but the clarification of beliefs already embedded in apostolic preaching.

Theological Meaning

Jesus’ divinity is essential because only God can save humanity from sin. If Jesus were not God, His sacrifice would lack infinite value. His divine identity assures believers that God Himself took on flesh to redeem the world.
