Question 74 · Jesus in John’s Gospel

What does it mean that Jesus is the 'Son of God'?

Biblical Background

“Son of God” is a title expressing Jesus’ unique relationship to the Father. Unlike believers, who are adopted as God’s children, Jesus is the eternal, uncreated Son, sharing the same divine nature. At His baptism and transfiguration, God declares, “This is my beloved Son” (Matthew 3:17; 17:5), affirming divine identity and mission.

Historical Context

The title “Son of God” in Jewish thought could refer to kings, Israel, or heavenly beings, but Jesus’ use far exceeded these meanings. His claim provoked accusations of blasphemy because He made Himself equal with God (John 5:18). The early church recognized that Jesus’ sonship was eternal, not metaphorical.

Theological Meaning

The Son’s relationship to the Father is central to understanding the Trinity. Jesus reveals the Father perfectly, shares His authority, and mediates salvation. His sonship signifies divine love, unity, and the mystery of God’s relational nature.
